6-lesson course · about 9 hours
Turn a scattered matter file into work an attorney can inspect
For Attorneys, paralegals and in-house legal teams
Everything for Legal teamsWrite clear legal prompts, prepare a first-pass matter brief where every statement links to a source, and check a client explanation against the evidence, with open questions kept visible for the attorney.
What you’ll be able to do
By the end, you can…
How it works
A tutor that meets you where you are
- Lessons that adapt to your levelSix lessons follow the matter from intake to client explanation. Explanations and examples adjust to what you already know, whether you are an experienced attorney or new to directing AI.
- An AI tutor you can ask anythingAsk questions by typing or out loud, at any point. The tutor walks you through each exercise on a supplied matter packet and helps you check your own work, much as a trainer would in a live class.
- Quizzes and flashcards for each lessonShort quizzes and flashcards tied to each lesson help you hold on to the distinctions that matter, such as alleged versus established, and when an authority still needs checking.
- Progress tracking and a certificateTrack which lessons and outputs you have completed, work at your own pace, and receive a certificate of completion when you finish.
Curriculum
The curriculum
The course runs in two modules over six lessons, about nine hours in total. The first establishes what the record supports; the second uses that foundation to research, explain and refine your prompts.
Module 1Make sense of the matter3 lessons
1Define the matter and jurisdiction
- Write a one-paragraph matter definition naming the parties, subject, stage, jurisdiction and intended reviewer
- Extract a relevant clause, such as a governing-law or dispute-resolution clause, with its document and location reference
- Build a defined-term check that compares how key terms are defined and used across the packet
- Explain why an AI prompt without a stated matter and jurisdiction invites a confident answer to the wrong question
2Separate facts from open questions
- Classify statements from the packet as established, alleged, disputed or open, each with its source
- Create an event entry in a chronology spreadsheet with date, event, source reference and status
- Identify gaps where the record is silent and phrase each as a question for the attorney
- Test whether a newer document actually outranks an older, better-supported one before relying on it
3Write the first-pass matter brief
- Draft a first-pass matter brief where every factual statement carries a source reference
- Prepare a source passage document that shows the exact text behind a key statement
- Write a matter note that lists open questions and items reserved for attorney decision
- Check an AI-assisted draft line by line and remove or flag any statement without a source
Module 2Explain the issue clearly3 lessons
4Frame the research question
- Rewrite a vague issue as a research question naming the jurisdiction, the relevant facts and the intended audience
- Draft a research plan listing the questions, the sources to consult and what would count as an answer
- Prepare an authority citation document that records each authority and where it must be verified
- Explain why an AI-supplied authority cannot be used until it is checked in an appropriate source
5Draft a client explanation
- Draft a client explanation in plain language that states what is known, what is uncertain and what happens next
- Check each claim in the explanation against a source passage in the matter file
- Identify and rewrite statements that turn an allegation or assumption into a fact
- Mark the draft for attorney review and list the points the attorney must confirm
6Refine your legal prompts
- Diagnose a weak legal prompt by identifying missing matter, jurisdiction, audience, sources or limits
- Rewrite a prompt with clear instructions, named source references and a required review step
- Compare outputs from an original and a refined prompt and judge which is easier for an attorney to inspect
- Build a reusable prompt template for matter briefs, research questions and client explanations
Who it’s for
Made for you if…
Made for: Attorneys, paralegals and in-house legal teams
Paralegals
You assemble the matter record and hand work to an attorney. This course shows you how to use AI for first drafts without losing source references or blurring facts and allegations.
Attorneys
You want AI-assisted drafts you can inspect quickly. You will learn to set the matter, jurisdiction and audience up front and require a review step, so weak premises surface early.
In-house legal team members
You field questions from business colleagues and juggle scattered files. You will practice framing research questions and writing explanations that state what is known and what is still open.
Questions
Good to know
Do I need a technical background?
No. You direct each prompt and check each result yourself. You should be comfortable creating and saving Word documents, PDFs and spreadsheets.
What should I know before starting?
You should have experience reading a matter file and identifying parties, dates and issues. The course assumes you know your area of law and how a matter record is built, but little or no experience with AI tools.
What will I produce?
Six outputs: a clause extract (DOCX), a defined-term check (DOCX), an authority citation (PDF), a source passage (PDF), an event entry in a chronology spreadsheet (XLSX) and a matter note (DOCX). You also build a first-pass matter brief, a research plan, a client explanation and a reusable prompt template.
Do I work on my own client files?
The exercises use a supplied matter packet. The course does not cover firm-wide policy on approved AI tools or client data handling, so follow your organization's rules for any real matter.
Does the course teach me to make privilege determinations or respond to discovery?
No. You learn to mark privilege, discovery and authority questions for attorney decision rather than resolve them in a draft. The course also does not cover giving legal advice directly to clients.
Does it cover proactive agents or OpenAI Dots and Claude Duet?
No. Proactive agents, handing continuing work to OpenAI Dots or Claude Duet, and hands-on platform practice start in Intensive. This course builds the habits Intensive relies on: clear instructions, source references and attorney review.
Will it teach the law of my jurisdiction?
No. You learn to state the jurisdiction and verify authority in an appropriate source. Jurisdiction-specific doctrine beyond the supplied exercises is not covered.
How long does it take?
About nine hours across six self-paced lessons.
